                 EDITORIAL

When the Explorationist was originally conceived by Ken Watson during the “Save Our North” campaign, it called for a regular newsletter aimed at delivering the exploration community’s message to politicians, bureaucrats as well as keeping our membership informed. To get this message out, 150 copies were mailed to politicians and senior bureaucrats in both the Federal and Provincial Governments free of charge. A part of the vision also called for highlighting various government programs and initiatives and to praise or question them depending on their merits, and to do this with accurately researched articles. It was not intended as a “feel good” newsletter for the government and many officials and politicians have felt discomforted by the articles. This we regard as success, as it stripped away some of the “smoke and mirrors” that are often used by the government and hopefully encouraged the search for solutions to our problems. With the success of the early issues, the newsletter was donated by the Porcupine Prospector and Developers Association & the Save our North Committee to the Ontario Prospectors Association but the Porcupine Prospectors and Developers Association continued with the editorial functions of the Explorationist.

Now regular readers of the Explorationist know there has been a long spell without any issues, contrary to objectives of the newsletter but may not know why. Earlier this year a faction within the Ontario Prospectors Association (OPA) put a proposal on the table for restructuring that only promoted the interests of a selected portion of the OPA membership at the expense of the remaining membership. At that time, the editor strongly disagreed with this bias and refused to continue as the volunteer editor for the Ontario Prospectors Association newsletter. The OPA executive has now modified its objective and now promotes the interests of all its members equally. Consequently the editor has agreed to assemble one more issue before retiring once more. This time so as to work in the oil patch

Web Editor Note: Congratulations Stew on the fantastic job you have done with The Explorationist. The Ontario prospecting community will miss you.

McIntyre Drill Core Saved
Andrew Tims

Moving Core

A major Timmins landmark will be demolished over the next few weeks. The mine buildings of the McIntyre Gold Mine, which produced 10,751,941oz of gold over its 76 year life span, will succumb to the wreckers ball. Included within the walls of the old McIntyre office was a condensed library of drill core representing a cross section through this prolific deposit. In response to the imminent destruction of such a historical core archive, the Porcupine Prospectors and Developer Association rallied to save the core.

On Saturday November 11, 2000 twenty-two members and friends of the PPDA volunteered their free time to undertake the relocation of 2,353 core boxes from the McIntyre mine site to the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines’ core storage facility. The rescue of this historical core will allow future geoscientists and explorationists the chance to study the geology of the gold deposit in their attempts at discovering similar gold deposits.

The following people volunteered their time and they are to be thanked for their efforts: Al Renaud, Karen and Andrew Tims, Wayne Reid, Terry Ternes, Dave Gliddon, Bill MacRea, John Reedick, Armand Aube, John Hussey, Mort Shannon, Steve Price, Norman Riburn, Ken Tylee, Pat Pope, Jim Garber, Bruce MacLachlan, John Londry, Brian Polk, Brain Atkinson, Shirley and Robert Calhoun. Kinross Gold Corporation, Placer Dome Inc., Echo Bay Mines Ltd. and GeoCal Exploration Services provided material support.
