The PPDA (Porcupine Prospectors and Developers Association) is a lobby group representing the interests of mineral explorationists in the Porcupine District of Northeastern Ontario. We concern ourselves with local, provincial and national issues affecting our members. The association promotes mineral exploration in the region by hosting the Northeastern Ontario Mines and Minerals Symposium every other year. As external advisory body, the association attempts to work with the government on topics such as: revisions to the "Mining Act", the Geoscience program of the Ontario Geological Survey and land-use planning. Our membership includes individuals affiliated with the prospecting community, the junior exploration/mining sector, the major exploration/mining sector and numerous service industries.
The PPDA operates on a minimal budget, depending on the support of volunteers. Regular meetings are held at 7 pm every second Thursday of each month in the Gallery Room of the Timmins Gold Mine Tour.
An elected Executive Committee, consisting of a President, Vice President, Past President, Treasurer/assistant Treasurer plus Secretary/assistant Secretary administers the operation of the association. The Executive Committee is elected annually by the membership at the Annual General meeting in November. Any member in good standing may run for a position on the Executive Committee by indicating his/her intentions to the Nominating Committee. A Nominating Committee is appointed the month prior to the annual meeting.
In order to perform effectively, there are several working committees, each charged with a specific issue. Committees currently reporting to the membership are: Mining Act, Land & Environment, Save our North, Government Liaison, Education, Membership, The Explorationist, Spring Breakup Ball, Local Citizens, Bearlu, NERAC, Timmins Economic and Development Corporation and the Geological Discussion Group. Committee reports are typically included in the newsletter.
An annual directory containing information on exploration and mining individuals, groups and services available in the porcupine area is provided to members. The official newsletter for the Ontario Prospectors Association, "The Explorationist", is produced by the PPDA. Both valued publications are provided free of charge to members in good standing.
